Jewelry is such a personal thing, and you should wear whatever trends you like, or stick to classic pieces—it’s your call. But as fashion editors, we have strong opinions about just about every fashion-related thing, jewelry included. Given that it’s a new year and the seasons are headed toward a change, we thought it a good time to discuss the current jewelry trends in anticipation of shedding our layers and revealing our necks and wrists again.
In recent seasons, all things Y2K has dominated the chat, and that includes jewelry. Some of us are still on board with that, while others are ready for something new and different. Wherever it is you stand with the current trends, you’re sure to find something you agree with below (and possibly some jewelry pieces you’d like to add to your collection). Keep scrolling for our jewelry trend hot takes, and to shop pieces we’re gravitating toward.
“This year, I’ll be setting aside my delicate, barely-there chains and jewelry in favor of statement jumbo pearls—a big trend we saw on the runways from Rejina Pyo to Givenchy. While pearls have been around for many seasons now (and never really go out of style!), this season’s iterations feel fresh in bold, unique, and standout shapes and sizes that will elevate any outfit.”
“I’ve been an “all gold everything” kind of person for so long that I barely have any silver pieces to my name, but this season stands to change that in a big way. Across the recent runways, designers finished off their looks with sculptural silver pieces that ranged from spiraled cuffs to chunky hoop earrings and I’ve been inclined to follow suit. I recently picked up this collar necklace and have been surprised by how many outfits it goes with. Consider me converted.”
“Jewelry is a category I’ve recently come to feel strongly about. While gold jewelry has always been my baseline, I’ve switched things up in terms of my statement pieces. I used to lean heavily on pearls, but now colorful stones have filled that void. They just add a stop-you-in-your-tracks kind of glamour that mirrors the extravagance of high jewelry. More specifically I can’t get over Mondo Mondo’s pieces that honestly look like Etruscan artifacts.”
“I’m so over the colorful plastic chunky rings that everyone was loving up until recently. They distract a bit too much from the quiet luxury vibe that I’m after. I still love to have fun with my jewelry though, I’m now into the cheeky solitaire styles that have been popping up everywhere. I have a simple band with a heart on it that always gets me compliments and also some styles with bright and fun gems. Matching them with my outfit of the day is always a good idea. It’s a youthful alternative to the engagement ring that lives on my Pinterest board.”
“This might be kind of specific but large crystal statement earrings aren’t something I gravitate toward anymore, as my taste in jewelry has gotten a bit more minimal and casual. A trend I’m drawn to lately is corded necklaces that remind me of the ’90s, but with an updated twist.”
“If you ask me, the only jewelry item anyone really needs is a great watch that goes with everything and can be worn every day. With that being said, I’m going without excessive amounts of jewelry from now on and editing down to just my trusty timepiece.”
“I am a huge jewelry person. If I leave the house without any jewelry on, I feel naked. I have never loved a drop earring so for me, those are out. Especially if they’re silver. As someone who loves gold, I know that I’m biased but there’s just something about a drop earring that turns me off. I always gravitate towards a hoop or a stud type of earring. When it comes to a jewelry trend that I am obsessed with is body chains or belly chains. I love styling a dainty gold belly chain with a swimsuit for a beach trip or even styling it with low-rise jeans and a crop top for some extra bling. It’s such a fun and different way to wear jewelry.”
“While I still love my classic gold chains, I’ve been getting more creative in the jewelry department in favor of statement-making pendants. Even when I’m wearing the simplest of outfits, a big pendant adds an eclectic touch that makes the outfit stand out. Consider layering one with your everyday necklaces for a fun mix-and-match moment.”
“I typically go for playful, kitschy jewelry but currently I’m opting for more sculptural styles. I’m loving natural shapes and hammered textures like those of Jil Sander and Bottega Veneta that are still chunky and bold. This trend feels rich, interesting, and sophisticated.”
