Last week, singer-songwriter Ryan Adams issued a public statement in the Daily Mail to apologize for what he referred to as “harmful behaviour” toward women throughout his career. “I will never be off the hook and I am fully accountable for my harmful behavior, and will be for my actions moving forward,” said Adams.
The apology comes more than a year after several women, including musician Phoebe Bridgers, as well as his ex-wife, singer and actor Mandy Moore—to whom he was married for seven years—accused him of inappropriately pursuing them sexually and romantically. In a story published by the New York Times last year, it was revealed that some of the women were only 15 or 16 years old when Adams reached out to them and then began using their newfound relationship to emotionally and psychologically abuse them.
In his public apology, Adams noted that he has “fought to get sober,” seeking professional help in doing so, and that he’s “internalized the importance of self-care and self-work.” He did not specifically mention any of the women, or the accusations against him regarding his behaviour with underage girls, but he did say this was not “like the same empty bull***t apology that I’ve always used when I was called out.”

Yesterday, Moore responded to her ex-husband’s statement during an interview on The Today Show, saying that Adams has not reached out to her privately.
“It’s challenging, because I feel like in many ways I’ve said all I want to say about him and that situation,” said Moore. “I am speaking for myself but I have not heard from him, and I’m not looking for an apology necessarily. But I do find it curious that someone would sort of do an interview about it without actually making amends privately.”

Since Moore’s interview, a number of celebrities have responded on Twitter with messages of support. Actor Billy Eichner tweeted, “I just want to say that there are few stars I’ve met in this business as unpretentious, down to earth, warm and supportive as @TheMandyMoore. And she somehow turned out this way even though she was a child star! Miracles happen! Adore you Mandy.”

Actor Yvette Nicole Brown called Moore “pure class.” Even Chrissy Teigen chimed in saying that Mandy Moore is “SO lovely,” while designer Peter Som revealed that he has “dressed her many times over the past years and can agree!”
Another thing we can agree on: We stan a queen who doesn’t let a problematic ex get off the hook with a performative “apology.”
