Throughout her long career in Hollywood, Jennifer Lopez has always dared to wear ensembles that some might consider risqué or controversial, from her iconic Versace jungle dress from the Grammys in 2000 (and again on the runway at the brand’s spring/summer 2020 show) to the button-down shirt and denim thigh-high boots look she chose for a casual day out in NYC back in 2018. So it shouldn’t come as a huge surprise that yesterday, in Paris for the Schiaparelli couture show, she arrived at the venue wearing a very elevated take on the much-debated pantsless trend that’s been garnering attraction since its big debut at Bottega Veneta’s spring/summer 2023 show.

This is what I mean by elevated: For the occasion, Lopez—who worked with her longtime stylists Mariel Haenn and Rob Zangardi, and of course, Schiaparelli’s creative director Daniel Roseberry, to build the look—wore black tights cinched at the waist with a large ’80s-inspired gold belt, an embroidered turtleneck sweater, and sky-high black stilettos. But the excitement didn’t stop there. On top, she added a hand-crafted and custom-made white coat made of over 7,000 real rose petals that, according to Lopez, were kept alive using sugar water.

On Jennifer Lopez: Schiaparelli outfit

At the show, Lopez’s work-of-art outerwear clearly stole the show, but in photos posted beforehand by Haenn, the singer and actor’s pantsless ensemble was on full display. And while sure, the trend isn’t exactly subtle, after looking through each image, the controversial aspects of it has begun to slip away. After all, who could argue that Lopez needed to wear true pants with this look? Or needed to change anything about it at all? I, for one, don’t have a single note for her, her styling team, or Roseberry.
