Total US non-farm payroll employment increased by 142,000 in August, and both the unemployment rate and the number of unemployed people changed little at 4.2 per cent and 7.1 million respectively in the month, Bureau of Labour Statistics data show.
Employment in manufacturing fell in August (minus 24,000) and has shown little net change over the year.
