With the change of the season always comes a good closet clean-out (at least for me). As I take time to absorb the new trends and styles that have emerged over the year, the best way to welcome them into my life is by getting rid of a few of the items from the previous year that I am no longer as interested in.

It should come as no surprise that I am a huge follower of trends, so this purging step is crucial to me if I want to make room for all the fun new summer trends I’m about to absorb. Now, the seven trends I am ditching this year are just the styles I personally am not as amused by, so if you love all of the items I’m getting rid of, that doesn’t mean you aren’t stylish or are outdated—it just means that this summer, we have different preferences and that’s what fashion is all about.

With that in mind, go on to browse through the seven summer fashion trends that I am most excited to wear this season in addition to the ones I am putting away (at least for now). From long shorts to crafty jewelry, I have a feeling you’ll be quite inspired by the new summer trends that are bubbling this year.

I was personally never a huge fan of super-short shorts anyways, so when longer cuts entered the picture, I was on cloud nine. From denim styles to tailored types, this is the summer trend I’ll be living in.

I used to be the queen of shell jewelry, but this summer, the trend feels a little too gimmicky for me. Instead, I’m stocking up on colorful crafty jewelry pieces instead like beaded anklets, mismatched earrings, and lots of charms.

Last summer, you could catch me in a prairie dress multiple days a week, but this year, I’m leaning toward more simple styles with backs that are wide open. I love the contrast of a longer hemline with a more revealing back. It feels fresh and exciting no matter where you’re going.

Remember thong “loincloth” bikinis from last summer? Well to be honest, I never really participated in that revealing trend for personal reasons, although I was tempted to. So this summer, I’m taking things a bit more retro by investing in high-rise bikinis, underwire tops, and festive prints.

The number of printed vacation shirts I acquired last summer is simply absurd. While I won’t be completely ridding them from my closet just yet, I will be swapping a few of them for classic but oversize button-downs. I love wearing them over swimsuits and with loose jeans.

Slides aren’t out by any means, but this season, I want to up the ante and finally participate in thong sandals, both heeled and flat. I feel like they are going to look so good with all of my loose jeans and backless dresses.

This is a newer trend that has emerged now that we are all spending more time at home, but it’s chic nonetheless. Instead of sweatpants, leggings, or sweatshirts, boxers are the easy shorts trend I plan on living in this summer. Last year, it was men’s swim trunks, and this year, it’s boxers. Thanks, guys.
