We did it, everyone. We’ve made it to the final weeks of 2020!
What a year, huh? Lots of tough stuff, but maybe a few glimmers of hope in the mix? Just enough of a tease to suggest that for all the challenges we faced together over these last twelve months, the road ahead will be bright? I believe so, and I say that with little more than a copy of Kylie Minogue’s DISCO, a photograph of Kamala Harris and a surprisingly flattering home haircut.
After a solid year of original content (Never Have I Ever, The Queen’s Gambit, Unsolved Mysteries, The Baby-Sitters Club), Netflix Canada ends it on a high note. Want your Shonda soaps? A Ryan Murphy musical? A David Fincher original? All here, plus so much more.
So, kick back, relax and treat yourself to some Grade A content. Here, our top picks for what to watch on Netflix Canada in December.
Mank (12/04)
After dabbling with serial killer profiling for two seasons on Mindhunter, David Fincher shifts gears to Golden Era Hollywood with this biographical drama about Citizen Kane screenwriter Herman J. Mankiewicz, starring Gary Oldman, Amanda Seyfried and Lily Collins, and written by Fincher’s father, Jack. Advance reviews have been overwhelmingly positive, and the trailers (in typical Fincher style) have been incredible. I expect this one to get some Oscar love.
Selena: The Series (12/04)
The tragic story of Tejano singer Selena Quintanilla-Perez was famously adapted into the 1997 drama that kickstarted Jennifer Lopez’s film career, but (believe it or not) that was twenty-three years ago and you are officially old! Despite claims from the original film’s producer that he had exclusive access to the singer’s life rights, her father and sister went ahead and sanctioned this Netflix original series adaptation—and so a swirl of conflict continues to exist around this poor woman’s legacy. Sigh. Nonetheless, this looks to be a bit more in-depth than J.Lo’s film, so it should be worth a watch.

The Prom (12/11)
Thought experiment time! Try to imagine the gayest musical you possibly can. Would it be a film based on a Broadway play about New York City stage stars, rallying around a same-sex couple going to prom in their conservative small town? OK! Would it star Meryl Streep, Nicole Kidman, Andrew Rannells, James Cordon and Kerry Washington? Sure! Would it be produced by Ryan Murphy and released on Netflix, with an eye to awards consideration? Totally! Well, congratulations, y’all. Dreams really do come true.
Tiny Pretty Things (12/14)
Sona Charaipotra’s best-selling novel about the ruthless dancers at an elite ballet school who will stop at nothing to be prima finally makes its way to the small screen. It’s Back Swan meets Pretty Little Liars! Look, as someone who loves ballet, drama and homicide, this is ticking all the boxes for me. Plus, it was shot in Toronto! And the creator/showrunner is Queer as Folk/Bomb Girls’ Michael MacLennan! And Lauren Holly headlines it!
The Midnight Sky (12/23)
From Wikipedia: “This post-apocalyptic tale follows Augustine (George Clooney), a lonely scientist in the Arctic, as he races to stop Sully (Felicity Jones) and her fellow astronauts from returning home to a mysterious global catastrophe.” Directed by Clooney, this buzz-worthy feature is based on Lily Brooks-Dalton’s popular novel Good Morning, Midnight and stars David Oyelowo, Tiffany Boone and Kyle Chandler. This cast! So full of rugged babes, OMG.

Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom (12/18)
In a regular year (and a regular awards season), this film would be selling out just about every arthouse theatre in town. An adaptation of the August Wilson play that centres on legendary blues singer Ma Rainey’s recording of “Mother of the Blues,” this flick stars Viola Davis and Chadwick Boseman (in his final onscreen appearance) and is produced by Denzel Washington. Universal acclaim! And a possible posthumous Oscar for Boseman? Maybe. I know I’ll be watching.
Bridgerton (12/25)
If Gossip Girl had sex with a Jane Austen novel and then had a baby, you’d probably get something akin to Julia Quinn’s bestselling Bridgerton book series. Well, here is the Netflix adaptation, shepherded by none other than Grey’s Anatomy mastermind Shonda Rhimes! Ooooh, this looks juicy in all the right ways, combining the ensemble sparkle of the best Shondaland shows with the repressed, period-specific romance of all Regency era productions. This thing was basically grown in a lab to appeal to you, my loyal readers. Check it out.
The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina (12/31)
All good things must come to an end…even dark witchcraft-related coming-of-age stories. Netflix decided to put an end to Kiernan Shipka’s Riverdale spin-off after two seasons, but leaves us with eight action-packed episodes designed to give fans some element of closure—or at least I hope they do? I think the cancellation came as a bit of a surprise to the creative team. Who knows! Anyhow, watch as The Eldritch Terrors descend upon Greendale, forcing Sabrina & co. to fight them off once and for all.
