If you’ve spotted some of the viral beauty looks that celebs including Zoë Kravitz, Hailey Bieber, and HoYeon Jung have worn on the red carpet recently, you have makeup artist and Chanel ambassador Nina Park to thank. Her looks are nothing short of jaw-dropping and it’s easy to see why Park is one of the most in-demand makeup artists of the moment, who the biggest celebs in the game have on speed dial.

Curious to learn more about how she achieves otherworldly glowing skin, striking editorial and red carpet looks, and seriously photogenic beauty moments, I spoke to Nina Park to learn more. Park’s fascination with makeup started at a young age. “I was always fascinated by the application of makeup. In high school, I would schedule ‘consultations’ with my friends or classmates—complete with a face chart and all—and give them a makeover (which is funny because I wasn’t allowed to wear [makeup] until I reached a certain age),” explains Park. “I spent a lot of my teenage years buying makeup and hiding in my room to practice applying in a natural way, so I wouldn’t get me caught by my parents.”

After moving to Paris to attend makeup school and assisting some big makeup artists in NYC, she branched out on her own where she further developed her eye. “My aesthetic has always been less is more. There needs to be something real about any makeup look I create, whether it be editorial or on the red carpet,” Park explains. “There has to some believability to me that [the client] would choose to do this on themselves.”

So how does that play into how Park is crafting makeup looks now? “My approach is always on skin first and then accentuating the features that they naturally have—maybe it’s building out the brow more or bringing out the cheekbone—but I never want my makeup to be the first thing someone notices,” Park says. “I don’t want my clients to ever feel like they’re behind a mask, but [to] shine as who they are.” Though her approach to makeup isn’t trend-driven, ahead, Park is weighing in about the looks she’s been gravitating to most this year and sharing the products she swears by from her personal kit.

“I use 2–3 different complexion textures for skin. To make skin look and feel like skin, I like to use a very light coverage foundation all over the face and neck to even out any redness, etc. I then like to use a medium-full coverage foundation/concealer to only touch any areas that may need a little more coverage, and a full coverage foundation/concealer to spot treat areas. I love using this method on photoshoots, or the red carpet because the face never photographs one dimensional or flat,” says Park.

Park names full, feral brows as another key makeup look she is applying on celebrities right now—especially when it comes down to emphasizing natural features. Park’s brow-centric looks are more focused on the eyes with softer, more neutral lips if you’re looking to re-create it for yourself.

Rather than bold lipstick or a matte finish, Park is gravitating towards lip tints in cherry hues. The effect is still impactful from the perspective of color but it lends a lighter, dewier effect that feels in line with the more natural makeup we’re seeing right now.

Yet another eye-centric look that Park is behind? Smoky eyes—albeit with a dimensional twist. Park’s smoky eyes are very blended with layered shades of color that add depth. No matter what makeup you’re wearing, Park has a pro tip to adhere to before you head out the door. “Always take photos in different lights: natural light, flash, overhead, etc. to see how it photographs, because photos never lie,” Park explains.

“I use these on everyone during skin prep. It smooths and lifts the eye area, making it look like you’ve had 8 hours of sleep,” says Park.

“I am never without this curler,” exclaims Park.

“I love to use this as a sheer veil of highlight on the high points of the cheeks, then apply foundation over. It creates the most natural and beautiful glow that feels lit-from-within,” says Park.

Park says she prefers to use cream or liquid formulas over powders, as she says they “[feel] more real and natural. These lid tints are so versatile and easily blend with fingers.”

“This new foundation has been my new favorite. It is light-medium coverage that makes your skin glow.”
