The emergence of new coronavirus variants has taken us all by surprise. While some variants in the past like the Delta have proved deadly and life-threatening, the latest Omicron variant, which was first detected in South Africa, has been found to be extremely transmissible and virulent. Although most cases of Omicron infection have been ‘mild’ so far, the high infectivity rate is what has become a source of concern.
