As a VIP stylist at NordstromRose Hayes is considered a go-to resource at the retailer when a client is looking to build out their wardrobe. While the selects Hayes suggests for someone certainly vary based on personal style, there are a few specific pieces she often recommends first. The fashion items in question actually fall within that practical category, in that they’re highly versatile and can be styled with so many other pieces that might already be in a closet.

Hayes is sharing the list of practical items she suggests the most below. You’ll also learn more about why each item is appealing to her and see styling inspiration. If you’re interested in adding a fresh find to your wardrobe, there are inspired shopping picks from Nordstrom as well.

“The next time you’re in a time crunch and need a cute, fuss-free outfit, try this stylist tip: Grab a great white shirt and pair it with your favorite jeans, cargo jeans, or leather pants. Add a third piece like a crossbody bag, a scarf, or a sweater around your shoulders to look finished and complete. It’s easy, chic, and literally always works.”

“Probably the most practical piece I own right now is this oversize black blazer. It’s perfect worn over literally anything! There’s just something about that oversize blazer fit that feels more luxe and designer looking. I tell my clients to wear an oversize blazer with slouchy trousers, then on the weekend with an easy slip skirt to brunch.”

“The other day, I counted six blue-and-white striped shirts in my closet. So needless to say, I’m a big fan of striped shirts right now. Pattern mixing with florals looks fresh for spring, but you can also wear one with a classic sweater draped over your shoulders. There are so many great options at Nordstrom right now, from oversize classic button-downs to pretty puff-shoulder tops.”

“I took a break from slip dresses for a bit, only to see so many lately that have me wanting for more! Interesting details like cutouts, high slits, cowl-neck draping, and pretty patterns have made slip dresses a practical go-to for me again. The reason they’re everywhere is that they can be styled in so many ways, both casually and dressy. Plus, they’re available at all price points. Most recently, I’ve styled a black floral slip dress with a novelty gray denim jacket and white sneakers. That same floral slip dress can be dressed up with glamorous drop earrings, a shrug, and a pair of heels.”

“I’ve been wearing the same denim style for a while. I tell my clients to try something new! These wide-leg cargo jeans are the new practical go-to pants that I’ve been wearing on repeat.”

“When a plain white or black T-shirt just won’t do, opt for a patterned T-shirt to jazz things up and instantly add personality. Some of my favorites have been from Mother and Anine Bing. They sell unbelievably fast, so don’t be afraid to go for it when you see one that speaks to you. I’ve been styling these ‘conversation-starter’ tops under blazers with jeans for that perfectly practical, put-together feel. This is a no-brainer look that works for so many occasions.”

“Having a go-to denim jacket is a practical must-have and a staple for anyone. I love to personalize mine with pins, patches, and rhinestones. The top-selling item on my blog, RoseHayes.com, is the Free People Swing Denim Jacket, which comes in a floral pattern as well.”
