With fall just around the corner, I’m already starting to think about how I’ll be updating my closet and which trends are worth buying. While I don’t invest heavily in all of the seasonal trends, I typically splurge on a key shoe style to ground my looks. For fall, that means a great pair of boots—a versatile, transitional piece that always gets plenty of wear from my closet.

After sifting through the F/W 20 collections, I landed on 6 of my favorite boot trends for the upcoming season. These are the ones that got heavy play on the runways, but will also fit into our new lifestyles where we’re spending less time outside home and comfort is a bigger priority. From reinvented riding boots to chunky rubber styles to subtle kitten heel versions, the upcoming fall boot trends are the perfect blend of practical and fashion-forward.

For fall, sleek riding boots have been updated with new details that reimagine the classic shoe. With everything from chunkier soles to subtle Western elements, the reinvented equestrian boot feels like a cool, modern take on the original. Expect to see fresh ways to style them as well, like pairing the boots with a bustier dress as seen in Khaite’s pre-fall 20 collection.

Spotted on the F/W 20 runways at brands including Bottega Veneta, Prada, and Dior, the hefty rubber boot is cool evolution of the chunky shoe we’ve been seeing for several seasons. Also spotted in Pernille Teisbaek’s second collaboration with Gia Couture, these are guaranteed to be a fashion insider favorite.

Yep, yet another chunky boot trend. Platform styles were big last year but will continue to be huge this fall as fashion people will be trading in tall heels for more comfortable flat styles.

The ultimate sleek and understated shoe, kitten heel boots are another style that I expect to see everywhere this fall. Falling into the same camp as flat and platform boots, these are all about comfort but instantly read as polished and sophisticated.

Patchwork patterns are an emerging trend spotted on the F/W 20 runways. Vintage-inspired boots are the trend-forward way fashion people will be wearing it this fall.

Chain-embellished heels have been one of the biggest 2020 shoe trends, so it’s no surprise that boot versions will be popping up this fall. Built-in hardware was a major trend on the F/W 20 runways that we’ll be seeing trickle in over the coming months.
