Icon behavior.

When I think of Jennifer Lopez, I think of a few different things. First, I think of “Jenny From the Block”—one of the catchiest songs ever created IMO. Second, I think of the iconic and vastly underrated movie Monster-in-Law. (J.Lo co-stars with Jane Fonda. Talk about a noteworthy duo.) Finally, I think of nude lipstick.  The last one is her makeup signature. If you scroll through her social media, you’ll see a lot more nude-lipstick looks than any others. So imagine my surprise when she dropped her go-to red lip combo in an Instagram video. Imagine my delight when it ends up being an homage to her iconic makeup look in the “Jenny From the Block” music video. You know the one I’m talking about, right? It’s the one where she has a glossy red lip and a golden and glowing complexion. Even though it’s a pretty timeless combo, she gave it a modern update using only four (yep, four!) products. Keep scrolling to see them all.

Her red-lipstick tutorial starts on a surprising note when she reaches for a nude lip liner. “The way I like to do it is to use a neutral pencil,” she says. “Some people think you should do a red lip liner, but I don’t love a red lip liner. I like it to be neutral; it makes the lips look fuller and plumper.”  Rumor has it that J.Lo loves this lip liner called Anywhere Caffeine, which is a warm caramel. She also likes Make Up For Ever’s Artist Color Pencil in Endless Cacao ($22), which is a chocolate brown.

Then, J.Lo says it’s time to “pick your favorite red.” While she doesn’t disclose the exact red lipstick she uses, it looks like it’s this one from Kosas, which is a neutral brick red. (The old packaging was black.) . She applies it to the middle of her lips straight from the bullet. “Then I take a lip brush and detail the corners,” she says as she creates small, precise strokes around the edges of her mouth. “When I think of red lips, I think of Marilyn Monroe, but I also think of Gwen Stefani. I think of Taylor Swift.” With the lip brush, she brings the color slightly outside the edge of her natural lip line to create a fuller, plumper look. “I always draw a little bit bigger when I do a red lip,” she says. “You can get away with that.”

Once her lipstick is done, she reaches for this product called Beso Balm from her namesake beauty brand. It’s a glossy, hydrating lip mask that can be used either a.m. or p.m.  “This is going to amplify the look,” she says. “The Beso Balm is going to keep your lips hydrated; it’s also going to make them look more plump.”

The final step is to take her brand’s Complexion Booster, which is a highlighting and illuminating product, and apply it to her eyelids. This product comes in four shades, and to me, it looks like she uses the Warm Bronze iteration. “This is kind of like my classic ‘Jenny From the Block’ look I did,” she says.  There you have it—J.Lo’s foolproof four-product update on the iconic “Jenny From the Block” music video look. Oh, how I love social media for bringing me content like this…
