If you’ve ever found yourself down the beauty TikTok rabbit hole, chances are you’ve stumbled across a video from Avani Gregg. Gregg initially garnered TikTok fame by posting videos in elaborate clown makeup, but is now known for personable, trend-forward videos where she tests the latest beauty trends in a fun way.
I recently caught up with Gregg at CeraVe‘s Cleanse Like a Derm event in New York City, where she joined a panel with board-certified dermatologists Michelle Henry and Dustin Portela to discuss all things related to cleansers. Before the event, Gregg and I sat down to talk about her personal relationship with beauty.
She joined me in a striking sky blue jumpsuit and blazer set (it’s Giuseppe di Morabito—we checked the tag together) and killer white platform heels, with long, coffin-shaped white nails to match. The burgeoning star sported surfer curls, had neutral, soft glam, and smelled like spun sugar (as a fragrance person, I was chomping at the bit to find out what perfume she was wearing). Keep reading for our full conversation.
Do you just want to start off by telling me about your partnership with CeraVe and how it kind of came together?
I’m really excited for this partnership, honestly, because I’ve been using CeraVe for like a really long time. It was probably my first skincare product that I used. And to this day, I’m still using it. It’s really exciting to be able to promote and be with a brand that I actually genuinely love.
Why is skincare important to you?
Skincare has always been important to me because I was a gymnast from a very young age to a couple of years ago. It’s not that clean in the gym. You’re always touching your face. I got started with skincare, which was just using a cleanser. And then I kind of [thought] like, “Oh, this is important for me to do. I should probably take care of my skin.” That’s where it all started.
What is your daily skincare routine like?
I start my mornings by using the CeraVe hydrating facial cleanser. Then I do their hydrating moisturizer lotion because my skin is dry. I wake up with dry skin and I go to sleep with dry skin. So I cleanse twice a day, sometimes three times depending on if I work out, but I use the hydrating cleanser.
Sometimes simplicity is the best. What do you love about CeraVe specifically?
I have so much trust in their products. [I like] being able to use it on my skin and knowing that it works well for my skin. They know what they’re doing, basically, which is nice because sometimes new skin brands don’t know what they’re doing. I have a really big trust for them.
If you could tell your younger self any advice about skincare or beauty in general? What would you tell her?
That I should probably take care of my skin a little bit earlier than I did. Not learn it like when I was 15. That and how much skincare actually helps with my makeup. I’ve been doing makeup since I was like 11. Having a very hydrating facial cleanser and lotion keeps a smooth base, which I would not have known. It’s really nice that that helps with foundation.
Do you have any beauty secrets or any tricks that might surprise people that you do?
Before, because I had dry skin, I was just putting foundation on my face immediately. That did nothing. It cracked away and peeled off because my skin was so dry. Using a hydrating moisturizer can act as a primer as well. The foundation doesn’t crease under your eyes and stuff like that.
Do you have a favorite foundation?
I would say either the Skin Tint from Milk or the Giorgio Armani foundation. I live by that one.
Your lashes look really good too. What mascara are you wearing?
I think it might be Valentino.
That’s a good one. You smell really good and I’m such a fragrance person. Are you a fragrance person? What are your favorites?
My top favorite right now is Billie Eilish’s perfume that she came out with. It’s just such a sweet scent. I don’t like anything too strong and out there because it hurts my nose personally. There’s one from Dior; it’s tinted purple. That’s probably the strongest I’ll go with a scent. But that one is so good.
What are you wearing right now? The Billie Eilish?
I’m wearing the Billie Eilish one.
It smells really good. I love it.
I have like eight bottles of them because I literally use it every three hours. Even though it does not go away. I’m just like, “I can’t smell it anymore because I’m used to it.” So I gotta spray more. I’m like this big ball of perfume.
You’re a cloud of Billie Eilish perfume. That’s really funny. I also want to know what your haircare routine is.
I just recently got into doing haircare. I’ve been using L’Oréal. It has a little nozzle and you put it just on your scalp before shampoo. It helps with my curls. I used to not really care about my curls. And then they kind of went away. And then I was like, “Wait, I kind of miss them.” So I started to get more into it. I use products specifically for curls. Then I brush my hair in the shower while it’s wet. Then I diffuse it and I use a leave-in conditioner and kind of scrunch it into my hair. And then hope that it dries the same way that I showered.
That’s always the challenge. Is there anything you want to add about beauty in general?
I would like to say take care of your skin. Period. I would have loved to hear that like six years ago. So I want everyone to hear it now. Take care of your skin. It’s worth it.
