The US trade deficit widened to $78.8 billion in July, up $5.8 billion from June, driven by a surge in imports, which outpaced modest export growth.
Exports rose by $1.3 billion to $266.6 billion, while imports increased by $7.1 billion to $345.4 billion.
The goods trade gap grew by $5.6 billion, and the services surplus slightly declined.
