Wherever you are located, chances are some COVID-19 restrictions have lifted, and so I’d encourage you to enjoy yourself. Get a bit of sun! Do some socially-distanced hangouts with friends and family! Maybe go for a swim or fire up the barbecue! Eke out a little bit of time for yourself, because it has been a challenging spring and you deserve a break.
And if you’re looking for things to do on the lazy days, Netflix Canada is offering a real mix of exciting content this July. Retro family or creepy true crime? Romantic reality or superhero action? It’s all online, so kick back and enjoy. Here’s what we’re most looking forward to binge-ing:
The best new movies and shows on Netflix Canada July 2020
The Baby-Sitters Club (7/01)
It’s a big month for us Sitter Sisters! Netflix finally rolls out its adaptation of the classic Ann M. Martin book series. The show, spearheaded by Rachel Shukert (GLOW) and Lucia Aniello (Broad City), will follow the adventures of Kristy, Mary Anne, Claudia, Stacy and Dawn as they navigate their babysitting business, friendships and young love, blending comedy and drama along the way.
(Look, y’all—this was a formative book series for me, and even though a thirtysomething gay man probably isn’t their target demo, I will definitely be watching it. Also, keep an eye out for The Claudia Kishi Club, a short Netflix doc that celebrates Asian-American representation in the series on July 10!)
Unsolved Mysteries (7/01)
An equally formative (if somewhat less age-appropriate) series for me was Unsolved Mysteries. I remember it like it was yesterday: Crawling beneath a blanket next to my mother, a dog-eared copy of a Baby-Sitters Club book clutched in my hands, the dark synth of the show’s creepy theme song would make all the hairs rise on the back of my neck as host Robert Stack would walk through dense mist and talk about unexplained phenomena or strange murder. Well, Netflix has revived the series for a new generation, with a whole spate of new mysteries to enjoy. I’m excited to be scared all over again!
Say I Do (7/01)
Weddings! Romance! Reality shows! Is any of this exciting to you? Well, then I have some good news. This new Netflix series follows experts Jeremiah Brent, Thai Nguyen and Gabriele Bertaccini as they help different couples achieve their dream nuptials. (And I’ll certainly be taking notes for when I wed my cat in an intimate-but-tasteful ceremony this fall. Don’t worry, Barney. There will be enough treats for everyone.)
Mean Girls (7/01)
The Tina Fey classic returns to Netflix. I confess, I’ve always been more of a Clueless guy, but the enduring popularity of this film is hard to ignore, coupled with early career showings from Amy Poehler, Rachel McAdams, Amanda Seyfried and Lizzy Caplan, plus a script that still crackles years later.
Down to Earth with Zac Efron (7/10)
Zac Efron has followed a strange career trajectory. Starting out as a Disney moppet, he eventually transformed himself into a beach-blanket beefcake, then branched out into unglamorous indie and awards-baiting films, and has now has settled into… well, this. I mean, no shade—he seems like a nice enough guy who has navigated some of the pitfalls of fame, and he’s certainly very handsome, but…a travel show isn’t what I would expect from him at this point in his career. In any case, this Netflix original documents Efron and wellness expert Darin Olien as they journey around the world in search of healthy, sustainable living.
The Old Guard (7/10)
Charlize Theron continues her tradition of portraying bad-ass heroines in this action film about a group of immortal mercenaries banding together to stop an evil company looking to replicate and monetize their powers. Exciting! Gritty! Immortal! Directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood (Love & Basketball), this one comes with buzz and, well, Charlize.
Cursed (7/17)
Fantasy seems like a successful genre for Netflix (See also: The Witcher), and so they’ve returned to the well for this female-led reimagining of Arthurian legend, based on the bestselling book series of the same name. The show follows Nimue, a young woman “with a mysterious gift who is destined to become the powerful (and tragic) Lady of the Lake.” She meets Arthur, and the two journey to deliver an ancient sword to Merlin. I confess that I don’t have much familiarity with this genre, but I do know that the streamer is promoting the hell out of this thing, so it’s probably worth a watch. Plus, you’ll have something to talk about with your nerd friends.
The Umbrella Academy, Season 2 (7/31)
Ellen Page and Co. return in popular superhero series. The ragtag group of adopted siblings are alive after last season’s cliffhanger and ready for some time travel shenanigans (and further apocalypse-thwarting). I thoroughly enjoyed the first season, and advance buzz on this season has been very positive. Superheroes! Who knew?
