EU Parliament backs 90% emissions cut target by 2040 to reach net zero

MEPs have endorsed a binding EU target to reduce net greenhouse gas emissions by 90 per cent by 2040 from 1990 levels, aiming to keep the bloc on track by 2050.
The proposal includes flexibilities for member states, including limited use of high-quality international carbon credits and domestic carbon removals.
A review every two years will assess progress and competitiveness impacts.
