Okay, hear me out. I love jeans as much as the next person, but pleated skirts have seriously caught my eye over the last few months. But because I love jeans so much, I have only the slightest idea of how to make skirts work in my wardrobe. Luckily, the fashion set has me covered in the pleated-skirt department because it has become a proper fall-outfit essential

And with different silhouettes comes a plethora of styling opportunities. You can now wear your skirts with dainty cropped cardigans or under oversize leather shackets. Go full Gossip Girl, and style your skirt over a pair of sheer black tights, or take a different route and wear a pleated mini with a pair of bunched-up white socks and chunky loafers—bonus points if those loafers have a heel.

Ahead, I’ve broken down a few of my favorite outfits from a few of my favorite influencers. All the inspiration coming your way.

A preppy pleated skirt instantly feels cooler when worn with a low-key graphic T-shirt. Choose a top that comes in the same color as your skirt for an easy day-off outfit that feels fresh. Plus, choosing a graphic tee that has a faded look to it instantly makes the pleated skirt feel more relaxed. Adding in a slew of layered chain necklaces and rings makes the outfit work for day or night.

A leather shacket adds warmth without adding bulk to this skirt look. A pair of chunky black lug-sole boots completes the look.

Not all pleats are created equal! If you don’t love the look of an exaggerated pleat on your skirt, try one that features a delicate, accordion-style alternative and that comes in a slightly longer length. To make the skirt feel more fall weather–appropriate, style it with other pieces like a tan puffer jacket. When going for a tonal look, you can’t forget the accessories, either. A pair of knee-high boots and a matching mini bag are great.

Nothing screams Y2K quite like a denim miniskirt—especially if it’s pleated. Style it with other similarly toned pieces like a cropped cardigan and chunky loafers.

Such a chic look. To stay looking polished, style your skirt with a pair of classic black boots and a sweet-feeling top.

Try a brown pleated skirt with a sweet-feeling sweater. Dainty accessories like knee-high black socks and a coordinating headband are great finishing touches.
