A 2024 report by the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research warns that ocean acidification, caused by CO2 emissions, is nearing a critical threshold. Acidic waters harm corals, shellfish, and phytoplankton, threatening marine ecosystems and disrupting the marine food web. Oceans, vital for absorbing CO2 and heat, may lose this capacity, worsening climate change. With six planetary boundaries already breached, urgent action is needed to curb emissions and prevent further ecological disaster.
