Contrary to popular belief, I love the wintertime. My resume wouldn’t tell you that though: after 23 years in Miami, people are surprised to hear that chilly weather brings out the best in me. To be fair, it’s only for one reason: winter outerrwear trends. Now that it’s cold, it’s time for me to really start dressin’.

As a born and bred Floridian who’s beginning to experiment with seasonal dressing for the first time in her life, I’ve been drawn to streetstyle and runway imagery focusing on coats and jackets. While it’s tempting to put on my favorite big black puffer jacket and call it a day, the art of layering is one I’m adopting into my wardrobe. Naturally, with a ton of layers comes even more fun outerwear.

Below, 7 outerwear trends that I’m getting ahead of and incorporating into my closet before they’re everywhere in 2023. Hurry though— add these to your cart before people catch wind and sell them out. Thank me later!

There’s a few loves I have in this world: old records, stinky cheese, and quilted, patchwork coats. Not only is the style whimsical, but it’s trending amongst the Scandinavian fashion crowd who love nothing more than to inject a bit of color into their outfits. After seeing patchwork explode in the warmer months, when temperatures begin to rise in 2023 I wouldn’t be surprised if every It girl owns one.

It’s official, per Pantone: 2023 will be all about magenta. Following hot on Barbiecore’s heels, bright hues still reign supreme. Magenta is PP Pink’s older, wiser sister who always looks put together, even on lazy outfit days.

Simply put, Totême’s scarf jacket is the winter outerwear trend that keeps on giving. This ultra-cozy style with a built-in neck covering has been adopted by a few other of our favorite brands, making it a worthy (and smart!) pick to have it be our crowning glory of winter trends.

What’s more cozy than a teddy coat? I’ll wait. The ultra-luxe, soft garment is a celeb favorite, and one piece of outerwear that editor Drew Elovitz wrote she’ll be wearing all winter to stay extra cozy on those sub-thirty NYC days.

I’m in my Amelia Earhart era. In my opinion, there’s nothing more chic than a cognac colored jacket—and aviator jackets are my latest winter obsession. The shearling-lined collar and oversized, baggy fit is just unruly enough that it makes me feel like someone from another cooler, groovier era.

Although the emergence of motorcycle jackets and racer motifs in runway collections aren’t totally thanks to Spanish artist Rosalía and her latest album, Motomami. the athlete-inspired aesthetic is here to stay.

Keanu Reeves stans, now is your moment. While faux leather trenches dominated the fall, the Matrix-esque trend is still a solid contender for one of 2023’s biggest outerwear trends.
