Total US non-farm payroll employment rose by 119,000 in September, but has shown little change since April, official statistics show.
The unemployment rate, at 4.4 per cent, and the number of unemployed, at 7.6 million, changed little in September.
Twenty five thousand jobs were lost in transportation and warehousing in the month.
The long-term unemployed accounted for 23.6 per cent of all unemployed.
