The Bengali widow cuisine, as it is popularly known is a vegetarian cuisine as the widows earlier were prohibited from eating any kind of meat. Earlier there were several restrictions laid on widows which involved eating minimal spices and limited vegetables. The Bengali widows ate simple foods made without onion & garlic and certain spices which led to the evolution of a beautiful cuisine which was simple, wholesome and due to the minimum uses of spices, could bring out the original flavours of the vegetables.
